New Jersey

The New Jersey coast offers great opportunities to explore the coastline through its Artificial Reefs and thousands of Wrecks. An Artificial Reefs any man-made object placed in the sea as a habitat for marine life. Sea life is drawn like a magnet to any large object in the otherwise featureless bottom sand. Almost anything will do, but objects that can withstand the corrosive effects of salt water are the best. As a result, when diving the wrecks off the New Jersey coast, a variety of aquatic life can be seen around them.

New Jersey is an exceptional location for biological diversity. It is at the extreme southern range limit of many northern species and the extreme northern range limit of many southern species. Furthermore, many strictly tropical species are swept into the area by the Gulf Stream and can be found later in the season until the winter cold kills them.

Wreck diving in New Jersey can be fun if you are exploring, artifact collecting or searching for good seafood to eat. Unlike in the tropics, in the North Atlantic, if you can catch it (lobsters, blackfish and mussels) and it is legal, than dinner will be a treat.
